Prior to being a guitar innovator, Leo Fender built and repaired amplifiers and PA systems for musicians. During the mid-forties Leo starting producing the Deluxe, Princeton and Professional amplifier models which looked similar to early TV sets. These early amps with unfinished wooden cabinets are now referred to as “Woodies”. The fifties amplifiers featured tweed, brown and blonde tolex coverings for durability and aesthetics. Models included the Bassman, Deluxe and Champ. The sixties amplifiers had black tolex coverings with black panels “Blackface” early on and silver panels “Silverface” towards the end of that decade. Models included the Twin Reverb, Champ, and Deluxe Reverb. In the early sixties Fender started introducing spring reverb units to their amplifiers which contributed to that classic super clean ambient tone players have fallen in love with over the decades. The latest generation of Fender amplifiers include the Blues Junior, Hot Rod Deluxe, DeVille as well as modern modelling amps, acoustic amps and Rumble bass amps.
Today, Fender Amps are as popular as ever. They are synonymous with bold and brilliant clean tones as well as being the perfect bedrock for effects pedals. Push a Fender an into overdrive and you have something beautifully expressive and musical.
