Australian guitar builder, Maton, create distinctive, high-quality guitars which have earned them a well-deserved reputation amongst some of the world’s most virtuosic guitarists.
Maton was founded in 1946 by musician and luthier, Bill May, with his brother, Reg, in Melbourne, Australia. At the time, quality guitars were hard to come by with the best ones having to be imported from the USA. Bill built his first acoustic guitar when he was 17 and it remains on show in the Maton Showroom in Australia. The name is a contraction of “May” and “Tone”.
Maton is very much a family business and, today, is managed and directed by Bill’s daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Neville Kitchen who continue to pride themselves on the discovery of sustainable tonewoods mastering the use of alternative native timbers to superb effect.
Guitar Village and Maton go back to the days when the Guvnor set up his first shop in Australia in the late seventies. He brought these quality guitars over with him to the UK before they were well known in Europe and we have watched their reputation grow and grow over the decades.
Players include Keith Urban, John Butler, Josh Homme, Eric Johnson, Michael Fix and Andrea Valeri but perhaps the most prominent Maton ambassador has to be the incredible, Tommy Emmanuel whose EBG 808TE signature model continues to be one of our bestselling acoustic guitars.
