One of the most prestigious guitar manufacturers in history, the Gibson company was founded by Orville Gibson in 1902 specialising in the manufacture of quality mandolins. Gibson began building arch top guitars during the jazz boom in the early 1900’s and, by the early fifties, with the shift in musical styles, the demand for amplifiable solid-body guitars saw Gibson and Fender go head-to-head to try to gain the lion’s share of the market.
Gibson’s most iconic electric guitar models were born in the 1950’s to mid-60’s under the stewardship of Ted McCarty. This period brought us the Gibson Les Paul, Flying V, Explorer, SG, Firebird as well as the semi-hollow ES series.
The Gibson guitar company today – officially called Gibson Brands, Inc. – is headed by former Levi Jeans CEO, James Curleigh, a musician himself with a passion for iconic brands. Gibson guitars have always stood for heritage and innovation.
