The Gibson SG Standard '61 Vintage Cherry has a Mahogany Body, Mahogany Neck, Slim Taper Neck Profile, Rosewood Fingerboard, 12" Fingerboard Radius, 22 Medium Jumbo Frets, ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic Bridge, Aluminium Stopbar, Burstbucker 61R/T Pickups, Orange Drop Capacitors, Incl. Gibson Hardshell Case.
The SG Standard ‘61 returns to the classic design that made it relevant, played and loved -- shaping sound across generations and genres of music. In 1961, the Les Paul model was put on hiatus and an all new design evolved into what is today known as the SG or “solid guitar”. The Gibson SG Standard '61 retains the styling of the original featuring a slim taper mahogany neck and a bound rosewood fingerboard. The mahogany body features deeply sculpted body scarfing, a 5-ply teardrop pickguard and a 22nd-fret neck joint. The nickel plated hardware includes a classic-style Tune-O-Matic bridge and keystone tuners. The pickups are 61R and 61T humbuckers for a classic voice with added power and top end. Controls feature audio taper potentiometers and orange drop capacitors.
The Gibson SG was designed with a finer, thinner, more contoured body with a double cutaway ensuring more comfortable upper fret access, made even more accessible, on the SG, by the advancing of three frets due to moving the neck joint outwards. The more straight forward body construction greatly reduced production costs of the SG at Gibson, with its narrower neck profile and small heel at the body join.
At the time of release, the new Gibson SG guitar proved popular although Mr. Les Paul really did not like the instrument in any way, perceived reduced strength in the body and the neck were personal gripes among others but have since been not validated in the fullness of time. It might be worth noting that Mr. Les Paul was enduring a publicised divorce from his wife and vocalist partner Mary Ford at the time and due to musical tastes shifting in the early 1960s his popularity, musically, was in decline, not a particular happy time for Mr. Paul, around that time made slightly more regrettable by Les Paul requesting Gibson withhold their $1 per guitar royalty and the removing of his name on the SG instrument effectively ending his association with the guitar, all of his own making, facilitated by his close buddy and former President of Gibson at the time, Mr Ted McCarty.
