Gibson return to Guitar Village

By Mark Johnson: July 24, 2019

One of the most prestigious guitar manufacturers in history, the Gibson company was founded by Orville Gibson in 1902 and started out life building mandolins. Gibson introduced its first archtop guitar in the early 1920s and, with the popularity of jazz bands increasing, focused production on archtops models. Gibson entered the electric guitar age in the mid-1930s introducing a lap steel followed by an Electric Spanish (ES) model and by the end of the decade began introducing flat top acoustics. In 1952 Gibson enlisted recording star Les Paul resulting in one of the most iconic solid body guitars ever produced. Gibson engineer Seth Lover designed the Humbucker in 1957 which appeared on their top line models. 1958 saw the first Sunburst finishes on their Les Paul models, they also introduced three new “Modernistic” models, the Explorer, Flying V and Moderne and, the soon to become very popular, semi hollow ES-335. After discontinuing the Les Paul model, Gibson released the SG model in 1961 with the early models still bearing the Les Paul name. To this day Gibson remain the premium guitar brand continuing to collaborate, supply, inspire and evolve with musical royalty from all walks of life.
