700 years after the death of one of history’s most intrepid explorers and merchants, celebrated guitar-makers Paoletti have set their sights on new horizons in luthiery. A guitar not only fashioned from their reclaimed chestnut timber - originally from 200+ year old chianti barrels - but adorned in the most intricate of mother-of-pearl designs.
In 1271, Marco Polo departed from Venice to begin what would become his three-and-a-half year embarkation across Asia. The reports of what he saw would make an indelible impression on the mediaeval world at large, and his manuscript - “The Travels of Marco Polo” or “Il Milione” in his native tongue - would become one of the most heralded of mediaeval texts.
“I did not tell half of what I saw, for I knew I would not be believed” - Marco Polo
In honour of the 700 years since Marco Polo’s death, Paoletti have constructed ten of the most unique and breath-taking guitars one is likely to see. Each guitar is adorned with illustrations reproduced directly from the pages of Il Milione - expertly crafted from up to 2800 individual pieces of mother-of-pearl. The result is a masterwork not only of luthiery but also of artistic prowess; the pictures of the guitar speak for themselves.
As a truly special and entirely unparalleled project, every future owner of these limited edition instruments will be invited to an event hosted by Paoletti Guitars for an exclusive presentation ceremony. The official premier will take place at the 14th-century Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista di Venezia in Venice, 2024. Each instrument includes a luxury glass display cabinet, and will be personally chaperoned to the door of the future owner by Paoletti Guitars.
