Roger Mayer RM58 Limiter Floor Model

The latest evolution of the Mono RM 58 retains the same Class A audio circuit path and the FET gain reduction method. The new housing can be used on a desk or floor and is convenient to use in modern recording or performance situations. The overall performance has also been improved and both professional +4dBV and semi-pro -10dBV operating levels are catered for. These new improvements allow the RM 58 to be used in new situations where a rack mounted unit would not be a good choice.

RM 58 History

The RM 57 and RM 58 Stereo Limiters are highly regarded by many leading producers as a Holy Grail piece of vintage analogue equipment and were manufactured in New York by Roger Mayer Electronics Inc.

They have a 50 year studio history and continuous heritage of being used on many hit records since their introduction.

From Olympic studios in London famous for the Rolling Stones recordings and of course Jimi Hendrix's iconic "Axis Bold as Love" to New York's Record Plant, Electric Lady, Atlantic Records, Columbia Records, Hit Factory, Media Sound, Elektra Records, Vanguard Records, Mayfair Studios, A&R Studios the unique and musical properties of the RM 57 and 58 became a go to choice for producers who needed an alternative more dynamic sounding limiter than the traditional radio station type of limiter that were currently used.

Other recording studios quickly followed both in the USA, England and Europe and the sound of the RM 57 and 58 can heard on the tracks from these famous studios who were responsible for many legendary iconic recordings of so many famous artists: Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, John Lennon, to name a few. Leading mastering studios also used RM Limiters and Atlantic Records, Record Plant; Elektra Records had custom versions made. So it would be accurate to say that you are already familiar with their sound in action.

Recording Console RM 58 versions were integrated into our Custom Recording Desks and also in a Custom Film RM Location Mixer for Rolf Pardula contained a RM 58 Stereo Limiter used for main primary dialogue capture on many Hollywood major film releases.

Rolf also went on to win an Emmy for TV series sound recording using his custom RM location recording mixer.
Fred Weinberg Productions went on to win multiple Clio Awards for TV Advertising Music using both a custom RM Console and RM 58 limiters.

Our unique proprietary FET gain reduction circuit uses input information in a feed forward manner to control both positive and negative peaks. This dynamically controlled gain reduction method enables the stereo center image to be maintained when using significant amounts of gain reduction instantly making it suitable and popular for vinyl mastering applications. Operationally It is almost the opposite to the old type of limiter where information is integrated over a period of time and then applied to control gain.

We do not specify limiting ratios because with our dynamic gain reduction occurring in real time it is always changing to make it very natural and musical sounding. The wide range of Attack and Release times parameters available enable many difficult recording scenarios to be recorded perfectly.

The closely dynamically matching of our 57 or 58 limiters is crucial to enable successful Master 2 Track Bus application tasks. Individual superb performance on Bass Guitars, Vocals, Drums. Strings and Brass for initial tracking etc also benefit from this dynamic matching.

The audio circuit path is all Class A low noise advanced discrete design only using the best available components. The resulting Class A circuit path provides the ultimate audio transparency with an extended frequency response to 100 KHz. The output is also Class A - ultra low output impedance.
Technically the design is very advanced and today its unique pioneering performance still stands out and compares very favourably to other later designs. Upon listening it is immediately obvious that it is significantly more open and dynamic sounding than any of the old type of traditional Radio Station Type of Limiters you may have heard.
So take time out to listen to a truly unique important piece of legacy audio equipment we produce today with an impeccable heritage and history to hear.

Real time stock levels

Fed up with websites advertising guitar that they don’t actually have? So are we! The Guitar Village website is updated in real-time, so that means the second we sell out of a guitar the website will say ‘out of stock’. If it says ‘In Stock’, rest assured we do actually have it in stock and ready to go!

Actual image photography

We don’t want you to have any nasty surprises when you receive a guitar from us so we do our own photography in-house.

Any high-end guitar with a figured finish or unique features will have its own images. If you see “✓ Actual product in photograph(s)” next to the product listing, this will be the actual item you receive.

Any guitar priced under £2000 with an opaque/block finish, or lightly figured woods may have an example image of the guitar.

Ex Demo/New Old Stock Products

Occasionally we list items as ‘Ex Demo’ or ‘New Old Stock’. These are new but may not necessarily be in perfect condition and could have had minor repairs, marks, scratches and/or other defects.

These will be fully described and discounted accordingly.

At Guitar Village we're committed to offering you the very best shopping experience possible. We strive to provide you with an unmatched choice of guitars as well as our award-winning friendly customer service, combined with the best prices in the UK. Occasionally the odd price pops up a little cheaper somewhere else. We don't want any of our customers to ever have to decide between our high level of service and a lower price, so we will always endeavour to price match our UK competitors.

To qualify for a price match it must be:

  • From an official authorised dealer,
  • Identical to the product we are selling (model, colour, specs),
  • In stock and ready to ship,
  • Clearly advertised at the cheaper price on their website (not a price quoted over the phone),
  • An outright purchase price, not including finance, part exchange or any other offer.

Usually these cheaper prices are offered by online-only warehouse retailers with little overheads and a "stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap" philosophy, sacrificing the customer service that's essential to back-up any purchase.

When you buy from Guitar Village you can rest assured that your item will be:

  • In stock if the website says it is,
  • Guitars fully setup to any given requirements by one of our full time in-house guitar techs prior to dispatch,
  • Triple checked through our extensive quality control,
  • Safely and securely packaged, then dispatched using UPS - fully tracked and insured,
  • Full after-sales customer support.
