Gibson Custom Shop is the pinnacle of craftsmanship, quality, and sound excellence. Each instrument celebrates Gibson's legacy through accuracy, authenticity and attention to detail.
As the flagship model from Gibson Custom Shop, the Les Paul Custom lives up to the high standards set by its 1950s archetype while evolving to a level of tone and performance more suited to today's musical demands. Beneath the layers of its "tuxedo" appointments lies the crisp, edgy voice of a matched 490/498 humbucker set, a solid Ebony fingerboard, a long neck tenon for maximum sustain and a two-piece maple top over a solid mahogany body which adds the perfect amount of sonic bite to everything from jazz to hard rock. It sounds as good as it looks, and it looks as good as it sounds!
The 1952 Gibson Les Paul was originally constructed with a mahogany body with a 1" thick (2.5 cm) maple top layer, known as a "cap", a mahogany neck with a rosewood fretboard, two P-90 pickups, and a one-piece, 'trapeze'-style bridge/tailpiece with strings fitted under a steel stop-bar and available only with a gold-finished top, hence the "Gold-Top" term was initiated. In late 1953, a more luxurious version was introduced, with a smarter, classier looking aesthetic. In fact, Les Paul himself requested a black guitar, wanting to "look like a tuxedo" and the term "Black Beauty" evolved.
The guitar had a mahogany body and neck, ebony fret board and mother of pearl block inlays on the fret board with a "Split Diamond" inlay on the headstock, taken from the carved archtop guitar available elsewhere in the Gibson line. The pickups were a P-90 in the bridge position and an Alnico V (Staple) pickup in the neck position as designed by Seth Lover. The frets where low, flat too, as opposed to the usual medium jumbo frets found on other Les Paul customs, the guitar given the nickname "The Fretless Wonder". The 1954 Les Paul Custom also saw the introduction of Gibson's new bridge, the ABR which settled and maintained tuning somewhat and allowed for subtle and effective adjusting. The new Custom also shipped using a black and gold case that was the top-of-the-line case for the Les Paul Standard models at the time.
