NAMM 2017: New Releases

By Mark Johnson: February 13, 2017

Now the Guvnor is back from the trade show and fully adjusted to the UK timezone he has spilt the beans on the lastest releases to hit the guitar world in 2017.  The NAMM Show (National Association of Music Merchants) is the largest music product trade show in the world. Founded way back in 1901, it is held every January in the golden state of California, USA, at the Anaheim Convention Center. In addition, a smaller show, Summer NAMM takes place each July in Nashville, Tennessee. The show literally contains miles and miles of exhibitor stands where instrument manufacturers get to show off their latest products. Owners, suppliers, employees, and guests of NAMM member companies are invited to attend the show annually where they can drool over the latest products and rub shoulders with endorsed artists attending the show.

As always there were lots of new and interesting models that were released at the show. Here is a taster of things that will be landing at Guitar Village soon:

Fenders2017 is set to be an exciting year for Fender with some eye-catching new releases. The centrepiece of Fender’s lineup is the re-release of the hugely popular Limited Edition Exotic range. Based on the Fender Professional, Elite and American Vintage series the Limited Edition Exotic series uses unusual woods such as pine, figured shedua and Malaysian blackwood to give these familiar guitars added spice. Limited to only 300 pieces worldwide per model these guitars are very collectable and normally sell before they even hit the shop floor. They will release one model per month starting in April through to the end of the year. If you want one make sure you hit that PRE-ORDER button now!
Another popular line for the Fender Custom Shop last year was the elegantly refined Artisan series. For those of you who aren’t into the reliced time machines the Fender Custom Shop Artisan guitars are pristine works of art using the most beautifully figured exotic tonewoods the they can get there hands on. As 2017 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Fender Custom Shop, the Artisan’s will feature the Custom Shop 30th Anniversary logo adding to their collectability.

One of the acoustics we are most excited about is the super-limited (only 50 being made) Martin D-28 authentic 1937 aged natural. This is the first acoustic guitar C.F. Martin & Co. have produced that has been authentically aged and the level of detail is just insane! Even the inside of the guitar is aged! The pickguard is reproduced by taking a mould from an original 1937 museum piece. Check out the Martin’s video on the ageing process:

We are looking forward to comparing it to our original 1940 Martin D-28. No pressure Martin!
The show isn’t just about ordering stock, it also gives the Guvnor a chance to catch up with the head honchos at Martin and, as a result, we’re pleased to announce we will be working in conjuction with Martin Custom Shop in 2017 allowing customers to spec out their very own Martin acoustic guitar. Details to follow…

Possibly my favourite archtop manufacturer, D’Angelico are releasing the budget busting Premier Series which will focus on the sub thousand pound market. The company are offering four of their most popular models  in this series, the semi hollow EXL-1, SS, DC and the solid body SD. Also in the Premier Series is the solid bodied TD (Teardrop) whose unique shape is based on an original D’Angelico archtop design from the nineteen-forties. D’Angelico also announced three signature series guitars: the Grateful Dead DC, Bob Weir SS and the Kurt Rosenwinkel SS models.

Eastman_SB59AC_1Another favourite archtop manufacturer of mine, Eastman, is venturing into the solid body market with the SB59/V  which bears a striking resemblance to a certain popular single-cut guitar. These guitars are very lightly aged in a genuinely old looking “Antique Classic” vintage varnish finish expertly applied by the same craftsmen who finish the company’s violins, cellos, violas and double basses which gives you an insight into how many stringed instruments Eastman produce. I personally love this finish and it will be available on selected archtops and mandolins.

One of our best-selling acoustic brands, Taylor guitars are releasing a new Academy Series aimed at beginners to intermediate players. They will retail at £469-£579 sitting just under the 100 series making them a great affordable option for the serious student. The guitars feature a contoured arm rest first introduced on the 900 series. The guitar also features a 24-7/8″ scale length neck giving it a lighter feel and, like all Taylor guitars, comes with an ebony fingerboard and bridge. Taylor’s concept for the new Academy Series is a simple but often overlooked one – when you are learning is the time you need and deserve the best playing instrument possible. Taylor have used their extensive knowledge, research and experience in materials and construction to produce a quality, affordable and comfortable acoustic range. Well done Taylor!
