GUITAR OF THE MONTH: GIBSON 1958 TRUE HISTORIC TOM MURPHY AGED LES PAUL

Guitar of the Month for March is the Gibson 1958 True Historic Tom Murphy Aged Les Paul Vintage Cherry Sunburst. An accurate recreation of one of the most desirable guitars in history.

There are countless guitarists out there whose dream is to one day own or merely hold a Gibson Les Paul from the late 1950’s. Let’s face it! few of us will ever have that privilege. Thankfully, the good people at Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville have closely studied and documented every tiny detail of the original guitars and, through the skill of the Custom Shop team, have been able to recreate the tone, look and feel of these iconic guitars. The True Historic series took a fresh look at the idea of historic reissues and really focused in on what made them the “holy grail” for guitar players. From the cuts of wood and the way they were carved to the electronic components, type of plastic and screws used for the hardware, every element is precisely measured and crafted to get you as close to the real thing as possible.

When it comes to relic-ing, Tom Murphy is the guy. Having joined Gibson in the late 1980’s removing finishing imperfections at the factory, he was asked at a trade show whether he was able to take a pristine guitar and add dings and scratches to make it feel like a well-played, well-loved instrument. His research and attention to detail led Tom to develop techniques to authentically replicate the wear found on the finishing and hardware of famous guitars.
Tom Murphy’s skill in this area led him to work with clients such as Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry, Dickie Betts and other legendary guitar players as the demand for collectable replicas grew and grew.
Gibson Custom Shop now have their own team using Tom’s techniques to create stunning replicas and ‘worn-in’ instruments but owning a piece of art by the master, Tom Murphy, himself is that extra icing on the cake.
FUN FACT: Like a painter, Tom Murphy signs his work. A stylised “TM” can be found on the top in the lacquer checking around the control knobs.
