GUITAR OF THE MONTH: COLLINGS 001 KOA

By David Stanton: October 1, 2016

Guitar of the Month this October is a real beauty! The 001 Koa from Collings blends the finest materials with superior craftsmanship to create a timeless masterpiece of tone, looks and playability.

Collings have an ever-growing reputation for quality and deservedly so. Every aspect of this guitar is flawless – from the perfect cuts of wood, clean edges and inlays to the expertly balanced tone and dynamic range. The simple unfussy design allows the natural beauty of the materials to do the talking.

Koa is a popular tonewood originating from the volcanic Hawaiian Islands. Not only is koa one of the most visually stunning materials but it’s often considered to be amongst the best sounding tone woods – equally at home as a back and side or top wood. Collings offer the 001 model in various wood combinations but we think this blend of European spruce top and koa back and sides has a special magic. With responsive highs (without any harshness), a focussed, sustaining mid-range, and subtle warm lows, the 001 Koa is versatile but best suited to finger-style playing.

Other features include a mahogany neck with a comfortable “V” profile and 12th-fret neck join, black ebony bridge and fretboard with a 14″-26″ compound radius, a traditional slotted headstock with Waverly tuners, mother-of-pearl inlays, and tortoise-style binding and pickguard.
