Beginnings

Eastman Strings was founded in 1992 by Qian Ni, a student from China who moved to America to study music. Having previously bought his instruments from Western trained Violin makers in China, Qian decided that a different approach was needed. Subsequently, he hired a group of highly skilled violin makers and went on to establish a large workshop where they could produce high quality, handcrafted instruments. After earning a reputation for his fine stringed instruments and bows, Qian decided to branch out into archtop guitars. Eastman Guitars as we know them today, was established soon after with an emphasis on producing high quality, high value, affordable guitars. It was only logical then, that Eastman should branch out into mandolins, ukuleles, electric guitars and flat top acoustic guitars too. In a relatively short time, Eastman have gone on to earn a reputation for their exceptional quality and craftsmanship which is why their guitars are being used everywhere from the the bedroom to the world stage!

The Current Lineup

Eastman now have an impressive range of guitars for every budget, with many shapes, sizes and ‘aged’ models available.

• Antique Varnish Series – “This line of guitars is built on a mix of time-honoured craft and ahead-of-the-curve thinking utilising classic technique with a decidedly fresh approach. It is designed to make such a rare and labour-intensive feature more available to guitar enthusiasts, with the proof in the distinctive look and sound.” The Antique Varnish Series covers solid-body, thinline, archtop, acoustic and  mandolin models, including the Eastman E10 00 SS/V – parlour style acoustic, Eastman T58/V – 50’s country/rockabilly style archtop with TV Jones humbuckers and Bigsby, Eastman SB59/V – an LP style solid body loaded with Seymour Duncan humbuckers, Eastman T59/V thinline, and Eastman AR810CE/V.
• Archtops – “Eastman skills in hand-carving tops and backs are apparent in the selection of our archtop guitars. The result: some of the most coveted and beloved archtop guitars anywhere.” Includes solid carved wood, solid carved tops, laminate and signature models, such as the Eastman FV608CE Frank Vignola, Eastman 805CE, Eastman AR380CE John Pisano, Eastman AR503CE, Eastman AR372CE, and Eastman AR405E.
• Thinline Electrics – “Eastman thinline guitars are handcrafted and lacquered — the way they ought to be. They have a warm, rich tone and feature premium pickups from the world’s finest manufacturers, meticulously selected for maximum character.” Solid carved wood, laminate and signature models, including the Eastman T146SM, Eastman T186MX, Eastman T486-RB Ray Benson, Eastman T486 and Eastman T386 – ES-style semi-hollow electric.
• Solid Body – “Our first solid body guitar… with Eastman’s signature written all over it. The SB59/v has the look, feel, and tone, of a 58-year-old guitar.” The Eastman SB59 is currently available in four classic finishes – two ‘Antique Varnish’ and two high-gloss nitrocellulose.
• Acoustic Guitars – “Eastman handcrafted acoustic guitars cover a wide range of playing styles and sound. The Traditional Series bring back memories of the great instruments of the Golden Era of guitar building.” Eastman acoustics come in a variety of traditional and modern designs including the Eastman E40D and Eastman E20D dreadnought models, Eastman E10 00-M – mahogany parlour, and Eastman E20 OM – orchestra model.

Eastman also produce a comprehensive range of classicals, mandolins, and others.
